Getting Things Moving

You've contracted with a web designer, now what.

• E-mail your site outline and site copy to the designer
• Send them any photos, logos, or other artwork on disc or in print
• Arrange with them to setup and bill you for hosting, domain names, and requested services
• E-mail them any user names and passwords, or FTP information they request
• Make a list of 10 sites that you like, or don't like, and send it to your website designer

The Design Process

Based on the timeline established between you and your designer, the first thing you should get back are rough site layouts. These will typically be layouts of your homepage and a few internal pages. Make as many changes as you like to the design of these rough pages. The other site pages will eventually be built off of the styles set by these pages. Get these right and the rest should be gravy.

Tips for Working with Web Designers

Every designer works a bit differently, so rather than outline all of the design phases, instead I'm going to provide you with tips for continuing a great working relationship with your designer. These tips will keep you in good favor with your designer, which will lead to a winning design regardless of the process they use to get there.

• You'll attract more bees with honey than spice. Respect your designer and they will respect you.

• Trust your designer. If you like the work in their portfolio, trust that they will do the same good work for you.

• Try to be a clear as possible early in the game. Major changes late in the game will send your designer into orbit.

• Design is subjective. If you see something you don't like, use diplomacy to change it to something you do like.

• Thank your designer if you think they've done a good job.
