Site Maintenance

If you are anticipating a few changes to your site each year than simply contact your website designer and have them do it. Most designers will have hourly rates for changes, or monthly contract for changes.

Websites can be complex and the person who designed the site is usually the best person to do the updates. Just as you typically would hire a heating expert if your furnace broke down, you should also hire a web designer if your site needs work.

Updating Your Site on Your Own

Your options are to learn a program like Dreamweaver to make your site updates, or you can have your site designed from the outset in such a why that you can update it using a control panel or additional software. Designing a site to be updateable by you will be more expensive and complex to setup. These sites also typically have to be designed with less customization in their look. Remember also that you may not have the time to do site updates, as your schedule may already be tight performing your primary job, which is running a business.

Macromedia has recently created a new software package called Contribute that allows non-technical users to update their own sites using a word processor type interface. This package is perfect for editing site text, editing links, adding photos, adding animations, etc. If you decide you would like to be able to edit your site using Contribute, it is important to let your website designer know this before they begin work on your site.
